@TeamSixcyle - Team Effort: Tour de Kirche

"Team Sixcycle-RK&O has enjoyed a successful start to the 2013 Bethel Spring Series, bringing a strong roster of riders to each of the first three races in the series. Racing aggressively the team has put three different riders on the podium in each of the first three races – Ben Fackler taking third in a break in the Ronde de Bethel, Roger Parmelee taking second in the Ris Van Bethel and this weekend Matthew Vandivort taking a solo win in Tour de Kirche. This team effort has put Matthew Vandivort in the leader’s jersey and has put Team Sixcycle-RK&O in the lead of the team competition series."

From "Team Effort: Tour de Kirche" on Team.Sixcycle.com

Bike racing is a team effort. Way too many people don’t get that. Read this week’s Team Sixcyle-RK&O race report to understand why.

Yes - massive kudos to Ben Fackler, Roger Parmelee and Matthew Vandivort for the podium results.

But the biggest kudos go to the entire Team Sixcycle roster who have contributed to each race result: Charlie Bird, Johnny Buenaventura, Daniel Cleiman, Ashley Doane, Oliver Davis, Ben Fackler, , Bruce Fecheyr-Lippens, Bryan Fried, Ryan McGarrity, Tom Mikolinski, Corey Morenz, Michael Nelson, Roger Parmelee, Matthew Richards, Deverell “Rsun” Smith, Andrew Walsh, & Matthew Vandivort.

Bike racing is a team sport.

And then he was gone…and stayed gone. Da #BrooklynHQ saw it first hand as he was racing for second in the blurry pack chasing.
Absolutely brilliant solo attach and win by Matthew Vandivort at today’s Tour de Bethel. Oh and he solo’d for the last five laps…#Badass
Can’t wait to see the finish line pic.

Dave Jordan Racing @ CRCA Race #1 - CPK, NYC 03.02.13

First race of the season and everyone’s excited to be racing again. There’s jitters and anticipation and then BOOM, IT’S ON. Kudos to Dave Jordan Racing’s Alan Buday for placing 6th in the CRCA A Field!

According to Nigel, “In the B Field and Women’s Field Dave Jordan Racers raced hard and well and mixed it up for the field sprint. Placing went 7 deep, some DJR riders in the Top10, others just outside.”

And shout outs to our @TeamSixcycle friends and Matt Vandivort who placed 2nd in the CRCA A Field!

We love seeing our NYC CRCA teams delivering the results in 2013!!! Looks like it’s gonna be a great season! Keep it going Ladies and Gents!!!

Grimpeur Bros. is proud to be the “Driveway Series” Official Coffee Sponsor for the 2013 Season

image

Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee (GrimpeurBros.com) is proud to announce it’s sponsorship of Austin, Texas’ iconic “Driveway Series" criterium race by Holland Racing for the 2013 racing season.

As Official Coffee Sponsor for the 2013 Pure Austin Driveway Series, Grimpeur Bros.' coffee will be served every Thursday from the Driveway Series' newly refurbished food truck, The Podium Cafe. Additionally, Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee will be available at other 2013 Holland Racing events including the Kenny Hill Autowerks Spring Classic, on Saturday, March 9 at Driveway Austin, and at the Tour of Austin on Labor Day Weekend, August 31-September 2.

Bags of Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee will awarded each week as lap premes in various races. Grimpeur Bros. signage will be at the Driveway Series and on The Podium Cafe. And the Grimpeur Bros. will be on-site multiple times during the series to personally brew hot and iced coffee for Driveway Series racers and fans.

Holland Racing's 2013 edition of the legendary “Driveway Series” continues a 26 year tradition of Thursday night criterium racing in Austin, TX. 2013 marks the 8th year that this Texas road racing institution is held at The Driveway. According to USA Cycling, in 2012 the Driveway Series was the largest weekly series in the nation. In fact, the Driveway Series averages 300 plus racers per week during the 32 week season and sees another 150-250 spectators weekly.

Holland Racing’s (HollandRacing.net) goal is to grow a stronger community and culture of cycling in Texas through events and partnerships. The company was founded in 2008 by husband and wife, Andrew Willis and Holly Ammerman. Andrew, a long time elite racer and former U.S. National Champion, and Holly, an engineer and project manager started Holland Racing with the belief that in order for the cycling community in Texas to flourish, there had to be a sustainable foundation of events in which cyclists and sponsors could participate. To date, Holland Racing has forged over 60 partnerships with central Texas businesses, sponsored a dozen cycling organizations, and hosts approximately 50 events per year, including bicycle races, educational clinics, and parties. In 2009 Holland Racing was recognized by Competitor Magazine for organizing the best bicycling event in Texas with the now legendary Driveway Series (DrivewaySeries.com). In 2011 Holland Racing was recognized by USA Cycling as “Club of the Year.”

"Going Backwards" - @512disch

I knew I was in trouble before the gun sounded. Our start was delayed by 45 minutes, which blew apart my warm-up and nutrition plan. A half hour before we finally went off the line, I’d taken one of two gels I had on me, thinking we were 5 minutes from the start.

Mistake #1.

As soon as we got going, I stuck with my initial plan to attack immediately and put a gap into the field. Ten minutes into the race I was second wheel, feeling half decent and closing in on the guy in front of me. Twelve minutes into the race, I realized that the gel I’d taken was wearing off and that I only had one more on me for the next hour-plus. I decided to wait another thirty minutes to take my remaining bit of nutrition.

Mistake #2.

In the final stretch of singletrack, I got sideways on a wet root and almost sold the farm (Mistake #3), but by that point I was so tired and frustrated that I was just looking for the exit sign. Two minutes later my big ring gave out (Mistake #4) on a long straight uphill and I had to watch the fifth guy to pass me that day pedal away, huffing out a massive cadence and cursing my decision to not get that looked at before the race.

In reality, this race was over before it even started. I missed my usual pre-race breakfast, due to a combination of hangover and laziness, then spent an entire hour “getting loose” before the queue at the start. Five miles into the race I’d already ridden over an hour and used up most of my calories for the day.

I never quite understood the concept of “going backwards” until lasts weekend. Unfortunately, this phrase is now incredibly familiar and I can describe in some detail what it’s like to the uninitiated:

  • The bike is moving slowly
  • When the bike is moving fast, it’s chattering all over the place
  • You can never find the right gearing
  • Headache…massive headache
  • Consistent use of the “why am I into this sport?” dialogue
  • Friends passing you mid-race and barely acknowledging your existence
  • Repeated looks at your rear tire…any tire really…as you’re sure there’s a flat somewhere
  • You zip the jersey down…then up…then down again
  • Attempts to get into whatever nutrition you have on you are met with staunch resistance from said packet….rip tops that won’t rip, seals won’t crack, random gels that, when finally open, refuse to go back into your jersey pocket

In short - full-out chaos of the mind, body and soul for the longest hour of anyone’s life. If golf (as the saying goes) is the best way to ruin a nice walk in a park, “going backwards” on a bike mid-race is the surest way to screw up an otherwise sterling Sunday afternoon cruise through the forest.

When Emily contacted us earlier this year, we were intrigued to say the least. She creates insanely wonderful photographs that we love. She loves bikes. And she loves coffee. Bingo.

Don’t believe us? Emily’s “About” page bio on her site reads as follows:

"Living in Los Angeles, California…probably drinking coffee."

We’re honored that Emily Maye reached out to us and super excited that Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee is her “official specialty coffee sponsor.”

Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee (GrimpeurBros.com) is excited to announce it’s sponsorship of NYC-based Team Sixcycle-RK&O for the 2013 road racing season.
