@512Disch on “Riding Marfa”
I couldn’t help myself. As I walked into the hipster-chic Marfa motel office I surveyed the rack of bikes: two completely flat tires on five quasi functioning steeds that all needed a bit of work. Goatheads in most of the tires. Loose headsets. Looser brakes. .
“How much to rent two of those?”
An hour later my newly minted fiancée, left hand lit up by the ring is slipped on it the morning before, rode next to me as we prowled through the tiny west Texas town exploring random alleys, storefronts darkened for the Sunday sabbath and truck beds filled with old dogs.
The rear wheel wobbled like crazy as we ambled through the flat, warm town. The cranks felt like they were about to spin off. It was a far cry from my stuff, responsive race machines back home.
…but in this odd little space cadet of a town, in the middle of nowhere, it was cycling at its best. I suspended the incessant drive for traceable training mileage in favor of a curious afternoon with the woman I’ll spend the rest of my life with. There were no pace lines. No KOMs. No kits or cooldowns. Our preride meal was a bottle of champagne in bed. Our recovery drink was a Peroni at the local pizza joint. I made repeated cracks urging Kate to get on my wheel when a headwind stalled progress, but she ignored me and I eventually gave up.
When I get back to Austin, there will be hills to climb, groups to draft, heart rate monitors to strap on and diets to watch. For two days though, riding was just….riding. It was fun and loose. It was celebratory. It was all the things that got me into the sport in the first place, and all the things I’ll somehow try to work back in when riding turns back into cycling in a few days.
Who Are The Grimpeur Bros.?
We’re hard at it getting everything ready to launch GrimpeurBros.com. Great specialty coffee. Check. Online storefront website. Check. Logistics. Check. Etc., etc. You get the idea of what we’ve been up to.
We plan on launching the Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee “beta” site by the end of July/early August. So we thought it’s way past time to start sharing some info about the Grimpeur Bros and what we’re all about - cycling and coffee.
Nigel and Dan met in 2009 at their kids’ school in Brooklyn, NY. Nigel and Dan quickly realized that they both loved coffee and riding bikes. They started to ride together. They started drinking coffee together. They talked and talked about cycling and coffee. Coffee and cycling.
All. Of. The. Time.
Nigel convinced Dan to race in NY. They trained a lot while Nigel continued to perfect his roasting, extraction, and cupping skills. They raced in Prospect Park, Central Park, and Floyd Bennett Field. They trained some more. And they talked even more about coffee and cycling. Dan and Nigel decided they had to work together on a project that involved coffee and cycling…aside from their families, coffee and cycling are their passions. A coffee shop? Coffee & cycling gear? Hmmm…
Dan moved to Austin in November 2011. They stayed in touch…talking about cycling and coffee. In spring 2012, they convinced each other it was time to take the plunge and Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee was born. Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee is
