@512Disch - Leadville Prep: Nutrition

image

A friend of mine and local Austin triathlete once described the Ironman as an eating contest. The comment struck me as odd, as there seems to be quite a bit of swimming, biking and running to do out there, but the longer I biked, the more it made sense.

By the time you get to race day for long events like Leadville or local marathon mountain bike races, there are only so many factors you can control: pace, when you burn matches on hard efforts and nutrition. Under normal circumstances, as we sit at our desks or drive around doing errands, staying on top of nutrition is easy. Eat when you’re hungry, drink when you’re thirsty, splurge when you’ve got a sweet tooth.

Coffee when you’re tired.

Beer when you’re feeling saucy.

In the middle of an endurance event, this all gets turned upside down. In addition to the digestive process, which gets complicated when you’re torturing your body for hours on end, athletes simply forget to eat. Without any science to back this claim up, the best I can figure is that this happens because endurance riding is characterized by a general ignoring of your body’s needs. “Hungry” is just one more warning signal we tune out as we attempt to find a happy place on mile 80.

Training rides leading into big events are key proving grounds for the nutrition plan you hope to use in the race. The mantra “nothing new on race day” is an important one to keep in mind. It’s critical that you test out different foods, drinks and supplements in race-simulated environments - long, hard efforts in similar conditions to what you’ll see during the event.

The challenge with nutrition is that as many books as you’ll find on “fueling”, there isn’t a hard/fast plan that works for everyone. You have to treat it like a science experiment: start with a theory…a baseline plan…see how it works…and adjust elements in isolation to determine how you react.

I came to a few important conclusions during this “figuring out” process last year. First, I need real food mixed in with supplements. I’ve got a strong stomach that can handle a lot of gels and heavy drink mixes, but I still need things like sandwiches to provide a good base especially on the front end of a race. I prefer a mix of peanut butter and nutella on whole grain bread. Just seems to work.

Second, I ride better when I’m “racing heavy” - when I’ve got a full stomach and come to the race with a big breakfast. My morning routine is a big bowl of oatmeal with berries, an egg sandwich, a cup or two of coffee (#coffeedoping!) and a bottle of drink mix. I take this in between 1-3 hours before the event at a steady rate.

Last, and this is a really particular piece, I react well to caffeine when I’m on the bike. Some supplements have caffeine in them, some don’t. I pick the ones that do. I rode with the founder of Gu last year during a Leadville pre-ride and he said that, contradicting popular assumption, caffeine in products like Roctane is intended not as a physical boost but as a mental one. It keeps you sharp when you’re deep in the pain cave. Nice to know.

For new cyclists or riders new to the longer disciplines, it’s critical to start testing a food plan well in advance of your big event. Just as importantly, as you get introduced to new products, build them into your food plan on efforts similar to the race so you can figure out for yourself if they’re actually effective.

With three weeks to go until the Leadville qualifier here in Austin, I’ve got my plan pretty well dialed in. I know my basic guidelines from last year, but I’m toying with a few new moves. I’ve got two more long training rides to iron out the wrinkles, swap out things like almond butter for peanut butter, toggle between drink mixes and water, and figure out how long I can go on gels alone.

This is the fun part. The short strokes. Race day is right around the corner!

Dave Jordan Racing @ CRCA Race #1 - CPK, NYC 03.02.13

First race of the season and everyone’s excited to be racing again. There’s jitters and anticipation and then BOOM, IT’S ON. Kudos to Dave Jordan Racing’s Alan Buday for placing 6th in the CRCA A Field!

According to Nigel, “In the B Field and Women’s Field Dave Jordan Racers raced hard and well and mixed it up for the field sprint. Placing went 7 deep, some DJR riders in the Top10, others just outside.”

And shout outs to our @TeamSixcycle friends and Matt Vandivort who placed 2nd in the CRCA A Field!

We love seeing our NYC CRCA teams delivering the results in 2013!!! Looks like it’s gonna be a great season! Keep it going Ladies and Gents!!!

Grimpeur Bros. is proud to be the “Driveway Series” Official Coffee Sponsor for the 2013 Season

image

Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee (GrimpeurBros.com) is proud to announce it’s sponsorship of Austin, Texas’ iconic “Driveway Series” criterium race by Holland Racing for the 2013 racing season.

As Official Coffee Sponsor for the 2013 Pure Austin Driveway Series, Grimpeur Bros.’ coffee will be served every Thursday from the Driveway Series’ newly refurbished food truck, The Podium Cafe. Additionally, Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee will be available at other 2013 Holland Racing events including the Kenny Hill Autowerks Spring Classic, on Saturday, March 9 at Driveway Austin, and at the Tour of Austin on Labor Day Weekend, August 31-September 2.

Bags of Grimpeur Bros. Specialty Coffee will awarded each week as lap premes in various races. Grimpeur Bros. signage will be at the Driveway Series and on The Podium Cafe. And the Grimpeur Bros. will be on-site multiple times during the series to personally brew hot and iced coffee for Driveway Series racers and fans.

Holland Racing’s 2013 edition of the legendary “Driveway Series” continues a 26 year tradition of Thursday night criterium racing in Austin, TX. 2013 marks the 8th year that this Texas road racing institution is held at The Driveway. According to USA Cycling, in 2012 the Driveway Series was the largest weekly series in the nation. In fact, the Driveway Series averages 300 plus racers per week during the 32 week season and sees another 150-250 spectators weekly.

Holland Racing’s (HollandRacing.net) goal is to grow a stronger community and culture of cycling in Texas through events and partnerships. The company was founded in 2008 by husband and wife, Andrew Willis and Holly Ammerman. Andrew, a long time elite racer and former U.S. National Champion, and Holly, an engineer and project manager started Holland Racing with the belief that in order for the cycling community in Texas to flourish, there had to be a sustainable foundation of events in which cyclists and sponsors could participate. To date, Holland Racing has forged over 60 partnerships with central Texas businesses, sponsored a dozen cycling organizations, and hosts approximately 50 events per year, including bicycle races, educational clinics, and parties. In 2009 Holland Racing was recognized by Competitor Magazine for organizing the best bicycling event in Texas with the now legendary Driveway Series (DrivewaySeries.com). In 2011 Holland Racing was recognized by USA Cycling as “Club of the Year.”

Introducing…Prospect Park CoE #5 Espresso from Brazil

We’re beyond excited to introduce our new Prospect Park CoE #5 Espresso from Brazil and available at GrimpeurBros.com

This is a special espresso. Cup of Excellence (CoE) finalists are amazing coffees by definition. The crema of the crema…literally. Our new Prospect Park CoE #5 Single Origin Espresso is an amazing medium roast that delivers a fruity sweet espresso melded with chocolate deliciousness and distinct grape acidity. This Brazilian Late Harvest CoE #5 has the goods and then some. Think: classic espresso, chocolate bomb

Historic Prospect Park in Brooklyn, NY, is a special place. Designed by Olmsted and Vaux, it’s Brooklyn’s beautiful backyard park and so much more. The Celebrate Brooklyn! bandshell, the Long Meadow, and the last remaining natural forest in Brooklyn. the families, the picnics, the drum circles, and the cycling and running loop - they all contribute to Prospect Park’s uniqueness.

For the Grimpeur Bros., Prospect Park is where our business was conceived…it’s where we talked incessantly about cycling and coffee while riding frigid winter base miles in the pre-dawn darkness on the park’s 3.2 mile loop.

For NYC bike racers, It’s where we race at 6:30am on weekend mornings Spring through Fall when we’re not racing CRCA in Central Park. It’s also where a certain George Hincapie raced as a junior.

We sampled a lot of coffee before we found one special enough and worthy of the name “Prospect Park.” Prospect Park is a special place in Brooklyn. This is a special espresso. Enjoy Grimpeur Bros.’ Prospect Park CoE #5 Espresso!
